Solar power is transforming education in Zimbabwe’s countryside. Without reliable grid electricity, many rural schools struggled to power lights, computers or even water pumps. Now, several major projects are changing that.

One example is a UNICEF‑funded program that will install solar systems in 150 remote schools across six districts. These systems provide clean, reliable electricity for classrooms and computer labs. At Ngaone Primary School in Chipinge, an 8 kVA solar installation was set up in late 2023. It powers a new ICT lab, lighting for classrooms, and even teachers’ houses on campus. Students can now have power for studying, labs, and using computers – things impossible during earlier blackouts. UNICEF reports that after these installations, more schools can join the national goal of internet‑enabled education by 2030.

Zimbabwe was also chosen to lead the “Giga” global schools connectivity project, which aims to get solar‑powered internet to every school. The Minister of IT, Tatenda Mavetera, announced that Zimbabwe will provide solar power and connectivity to many schools as part of Giga. In practice, this means even the smallest village schools will eventually have both computers and Wi-Fi, all running on solar energy. Such connectivity opens up world-class education resources for students and teachers.

These solar school projects have big benefits. They enable digital learning (so kids can use e-books, online lessons, and school management software), and extend study hours with light after dark. For example, in Ngaone School students now “learn from old textbooks” AND new laptops – a first for that rural area. School clinics can refrigerate vaccines and run lights. Overall, solar turns dark school buildings into 21st-century learning centers.
If you manage a school or community center, you should work with a certified installer who understands schooling needs. A pro regulations and standards company like Frontier Solar can design a system for classrooms or computer labs, including batteries for weekend and nighttime use. They can also train staff on upkeep. Frontier Solar (www.frontiersolarzw.com, +263 777 978 326) has experienced engineers in all types of installations, ensuring IEC/ZWS‑compliance. With the right partner, solar can help Zimbabwe’s children and teachers access education technology – a vital step toward modernizing the nation’s schools.
